What does it mean to be part of the National Aquarium in Baltimore staff?

Working at the Aquarium isn't just a clock-in, clock-out job. It means being part diplomat, part environmentalist, part teacher, and all of it high profile! As Maryland's premier tourist draw, the Aquarium attracts more than 1.7 million visitors each year. To work here isn't just a job, it's an honor. And our goal is to find people who will do our city, our state, and our mission proud. There are five things you should know about working at the Aquarium. You can remember them by using the letters W.A.T.E.R.

  • W- Wages: At The Aquarium there are 4 types of employment opportunities.
    - Full-time employees work 40 hours a week and receive full benefits.
    - Part-time employees work 20-38 hours a week and received reduced benefits.
    - Supplemental employees work 20-30 hours a week all year and receive holiday pay.
    - Seasonal employees work 20 hours a week during holiday and summer periods and receive holiday pay.

  • A-Availability: The Aquarium is open 363 days a year (we're closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas). Keep in mind that depending on the job for which you apply, you may have to work on holidays and weekends. Availability also means being available for our visitors. Every minute you're at work you are representing the Aquarium. That means being available to do whatever it takes.

  • T-Timeliness: As an employee of the Aquarium it is essential that you are time. Thousands of visitors come here everyday and it only takes on employee not being at their post to ruin what would have been a memorable visit. In other words, 8 a.m. means 8 a.m., not 8:01.

  • E-Experience: Visitors who come to the Aquarium are looking for a special experience. One way we promise that is by presenting ourselves in a way that will do the Aquarium, Baltimore and our state proud. To that end, your job here requires that you have a clean, smart appearance. It also means knowing important information and going the extra mile to ensure that visits are memorable ones.

  • R-Responsibility: Just as the Aquarium has a responsibility to help the ecosystems of the world, it also has a responsibility to the community of Baltimore. We are committed to hiring great employees with great attitudes regardless of race, nationality, or religion. Our focus is to have a great staff that represents our community well.
